Centring best-practice guide

Simple site rules for mestris, workers, engineers, builders and material suppliers. Safe, strong, on-time slabs.

i
Disclaimer: This guide is for general education. Stripping times, defect fixes and rules of thumb are indicative and depend on cement, weather, loading and design. They do not replace IS 456 or the instructions of your structural engineer or site engineer. Never remove props or formwork without engineer approval.

The 8 golden rules of centring

1. Design before you erectEvery slab, beam and cantilever needs a prop layout from the engineer or a supplier load chart. Never decide spacing by eye.
2. Foundation of the falseworkProps are only as strong as the ground or slab they stand on. Use sole plates; never bricks, loose wood or soft soil.
3. Plumb and bracedProps vertical, extensions limited, horizontal ties and diagonal bracing fitted. A leaning prop carries a fraction of its load.
4. Tight, clean, oiledTight joints, no gaps. Clean and oil plates before every use. Leaks cause honeycombing and rust stains.
5. Check before the pourSigned pre-pour checklist: level, line, props, steel cover, cut-outs, sleeves, edge protection. No signature, no concrete.
6. Watch during the pourOne trained person stands below with spare props and a mallet. Any sag, bulge or noise: stop and fix.
7. Strip by time and strengthFollow the stripping table. Never remove soffit props early to save hire days. Re-prop where required.
8. Safety is part of the jobHelmet, shoes, harness at edges, guard-rails, lighting. Nobody under a pour or a stripping zone.
Note: This guide gives general good practice based on IS 456:2000 (cl. 11, formwork), IS 14687:1999 (falsework), IS 4014 and IS 3696 (scaffolds), IS 7969 (site safety) and IS 4990 (plywood). It does not replace the structural engineer's drawings or the project specification. If they differ, follow the engineer.

Before you start (పని మొదలుపెట్టే ముందు)
  • Get the slab thickness, spans, beam sizes and floor height from the engineer or builder. Ask for the prop layout.
  • Count and inspect all material on arrival: props, plates, jacks, runners, pins, couplers. Reject bent, cracked or heavily rusted items.
  • Mark the grid on the floor or ground. Fix levels and centre lines using a level, string line and plumb bob.
  • Check the ground: compact it, drain it, lay sole plates (timber sleeper, steel plate or compacted PCC). In rain season (June–Sept) soft soil is the biggest danger.
  • Props over upper floors must stand over the props below, so the load goes straight down to the ground.
Erecting props and beams
  • Fix props vertically on the grid, with the base plate fully on the sole plate. Check plumb with a spirit level or plumb bob.
  • Fix the prop pin through the hole fully, and tighten the adjusting nut by hand. Do not hammer or use a pipe extension on the nut.
  • Use the extension only within the supplier's marked safe height. Longer extension means lower capacity; add horizontal ties and bracing.
  • Never join two short props end to end, and never pack under a prop with bricks, stones or loose wood.
  • Fit U-head (top jack) properly, centred under the runner or joist. Runners must sit square in the U-head.
  • Beam sides: fix the bottom first, then sides. Beam side plates must be tied or clamped so they do not open under concrete pressure.
  • Column shutters: fix a base kicker or collar, clamp in both directions at spacing from the engineer, and brace with 2 inclined props to resist the pour pressure. Check plumb in two directions.
  • Keep a 1 in 500 or better upward camber on longer beams and slabs if the engineer has asked for it.
Plates, joints and oil
  • Clean plates with a scraper or wire brush, removing old cement and rust. Do not use burnt engine oil.
  • Apply a thin, even coat of release agent (shuttering oil). Too much oil stains the concrete and weakens the bond with the next pour.
  • Seal gaps with tape, foam strip or thin PVC strips. Grout leakage causes honeycombing at beam bottoms and slab edges.
  • Do not oil the reinforcing steel. Oil on steel destroys the bond.
  • Lay slab plates with a fixed pattern; use cut pieces and plywood fillers only at the edges, and fix them rigidly.
During the pour (watchman duty)
  • Keep one trained person under the slab with spare props, wedges and a hammer for the whole pour.
  • Look for props sinking, leaning or springing, plates bulging and grout leaking. Stop pouring in that bay and fix before continuing.
  • Do not heap concrete. Spread it in layers; avoid piling stacks of steel, bricks or wheel-barrow trains in one place.
  • Use runways for barrows; do not let them rest on the reinforcement or the shuttering.
  • Vibrate properly but do not touch the shuttering with the needle for long periods, and never use it to move concrete sideways.
  • Keep working in a safe order, keep out from under any section being poured, and send workers out immediately if there is a failure.
Stripping and cleaning
  • Do not remove any prop or soffit plate without the engineer's or supervisor's go-ahead. Follow the Stripping tab.
  • Remove side plates first, then lower the props gently by releasing the nut. Do not hammer or yank plates off the slab.
  • Re-prop as per the table where the slab or beam needs it. Never stack heavy material on a freshly stripped slab.
  • Clean, oil and stack plates flat, by size. Count and return all hire items; note damaged pieces before the supplier does.
Personal safety
  • Wear helmet, safety shoes and gloves. Use a harness when working at slab edges and on beam tops.
  • No work in strong wind or heavy rain, no working after dark without proper lights, and no working while drunk.
  • Use proper ladders or staircase access. Do not climb on props or jump between plates.
  • Keep cables off wet steel and plates. Use a proper switchboard with a cut-out, not bare wires.
  • Keep a first-aid box and phone numbers at site. Know where the nearest hospital is.
Planning and design checks
  • Get a falsework design or a supplier load chart for slab thickness, beam depth and floor height. Verify the safe working load (SWL) of props at the extended height.
  • Typical loads: concrete 25 kN/m³ (a 150 mm slab ≈ 3.75 kN/m²), formwork self-weight ≈ 0.5–1.0 kN/m², construction live load commonly 1.5–2.5 kN/m² plus any heaping. Check the project spec.
  • Typical prop grid for 125–150 mm slabs is about 0.9–1.2 m c/c, closer under beams and thick sections. Treat this as indicative only and confirm with the prop chart.
  • Verify the bearing capacity of the soil or lower slab. Check that lower slabs can take the load from upper-floor falsework (multi-storey propping).
  • Check the concrete pour sequence, construction joints, pour rate, and slump. Hydrostatic pressure on column and wall forms depends on the rate of rise, temperature and slump.
Pre-pour inspection checklist
  • Grid, levels, line and plumb checked; tolerances within the spec (commonly ±5 mm on levels, columns within about 6 mm in 3 m).
  • Props plumb, pins fully engaged, nuts tight, U-heads centred; extension within the marked limit.
  • Sole plates adequate and the ground dry and drained; no props sitting on soft or recently backfilled soil.
  • Bracing: horizontal ties at the stated heights, diagonal bracing in both directions for props over 3.5 m or as designed.
  • Camber on long beams and slabs, and propping for cantilevers, as per drawings.
  • Plates clean, oiled, tight; joints sealed; openings, sleeves, conduits and embedded items fixed.
  • Cover blocks in place and adequate for the member (bar cover as per drawing); reinforcement tied, clean and free of oil.
  • Edge protection, guard-rails, access and lighting ready; spare props and a watchman assigned.
Concrete and pour control
  • Check the delivery slip, mix grade and slump at the site. Take cubes as per the sampling plan; keep at least some for early-age tests if early stripping is planned.
  • Do not drop concrete from more than about 1.5 m; use a chute or tremie in columns. Place in layers and compact thoroughly.
  • In hot weather (summer in Hyderabad), pour in cooler hours, shade and wet the plates and steel before placement, and start curing early to control plastic shrinkage cracking.
  • In rain, cover the fresh concrete and fix a rain-water drainage plan; do not pour if heavy rain is forecast and not manageable.
Stripping and re-propping
  • Use the table (IS 456 cl. 11.3) as the minimum for OPC at 15 °C or above. For PPC, PSC, fly-ash cement, thick members, cold weather or heavy early loads, extend the times, or confirm with cube strength.
  • Sides first, then lower soffit plates. Keep the re-props (back-props) in place as per the engineer's instruction.
  • Cantilevers: do not strip until the anchoring back-span has gained strength and the engineer allows it.
  • Record the date of each pour and the stripping date for every bay. Keep a simple log at site.
Curing
  • Cure for at least 7 days for OPC, and at least 10 days for blended cement, mineral admixtures or in hot, dry conditions (IS 456 cl. 13.5).
  • Ponding on slabs, wet gunny or curing compound on sides. Start as soon as the surface can take it without damage.
Hiring a centring contractor
  • Ask for a written scope: area, thickness, floors, heights, whether materials are included, number of times the plates will be reused, and how many days they may stay on site.
  • Check experience with similar slabs, spans and heights. Visit a running site if you can.
  • Fix a clear rate basis (₹/sq.ft for labour, hire per day for material), who bears damage and loss, and what is included for cleaning and oil.
  • Do not drive the price down so far that the mestri has to cut props, bracing or labour. Low bids are the main cause of shortcuts.
Planning the schedule
  • Plan pour dates, stripping dates and the next floor start together. Early stripping saves hire rent but risks cracks and deflection; a few extra days of hire is cheap against repairs.
  • Give the mestri correct drawings and revisions. Late changes in beam size or slab level cause rework and unsafe site fixes.
  • Arrange concrete supply, vibrators, a standby generator and labour before the pour; a pour delayed by half a day puts the formwork under stress and the crew under pressure.
  • In monsoon, plan drainage and ground protection before the props go up.
Your duties on site
  • Insist on a pre-pour inspection by your engineer and a written go-ahead.
  • Do not allow heavy materials (steel bundles, bricks, cement) to be stacked on a freshly cast slab.
  • Provide safe access, water, power and lighting for the crew.
  • Insist on safety gear. Accidents bring work stoppage, legal trouble and human cost.
  • Pay on time, based on measured work. Delayed pay leads to cut corners and labour leaving mid-job.
  • Keep records: drawings, pour dates, cube results, hire challans, and stripping dates.
Quality of hire material
  • Inspect every prop for straightness, wall thickness, thread and nut condition, pin and hole wear, base plate and top plate welds. Reject bent, dented, cracked or badly corroded pieces.
  • Plates: straight, no warping, edges and clips intact, flat surface free of heavy rust and old concrete.
  • Mark or stamp each prop with its size and safe working load at its full extension. Give the load-height chart to the mestri and the engineer.
  • Keep spare pins, nuts and U-heads so that no one uses a nail or wire in their place.
  • Test sample props periodically and retire them at the end of their useful life.
Delivery, hire terms and records
  • Count and write down every item on the challan at delivery and at return. Photograph the condition for a dispute-free return.
  • Put in writing the hire rate, minimum days, deposit, damage and loss charges, and what is classed as normal wear.
  • Clean, sort and stack items as per size on return. Oil and repair the plates before reuse.
  • Transport props and plates tied and secured; avoid throwing material from trucks.
Advising your customers
  • Advise the mestri and the builder on the number of props and plates needed for the actual slab, not just the cheapest figure.
  • Be honest about capacity at the extended height; do not let your props be used beyond the safe limit.
  • Share the Guide with each customer, and report unsafe use to the engineer if you see it.
  • Track each customer's demand season and keep spare stock ahead of peak months.

Minimum stripping time (IS 456:2000 cl. 11.3, OPC, 15 °C or above)

ItemMinimum time
Side forms: columns, walls, beam sides16–24 hours
Slab soffit plates (props re-fixed at once)3 days
Beam soffit plates (props re-fixed at once)7 days
Props to slabs spanning up to 4.5 m7 days
Props to slabs spanning over 4.5 m14 days
Props to beams and arches spanning up to 6 m14 days
Props to beams and arches spanning over 6 m21 days

For PPC, PSC, fly-ash or slag cement, cold weather, heavy loads or cantilevers, extend these times or rely on cube test strength and the engineer's approval.

Common defects, causes and prevention

DefectTypical causePrevention
HoneycombingGrout leakage at joints, poor vibration, congested steelSeal joints, check plates, vibrate in layers, use proper cover blocks
Bulging sides / blow-outWeak clamps, fast pour, high slump, wet pressureAdd clamps and ties, limit rate of lift, control slump, brace columns
Slab sag / deflectionWide prop spacing, early stripping, loose props or soft groundFollow the grid, add sole plates, strip on time, re-prop as required
Cracks near props or beamsProps moved during the pour, removal too early, shrinkageDo not disturb props, cure, and follow stripping times
Column out of plumbWeak bracing, loose clamps, unchecked plumb after pour startsFix 2 inclined props, check plumb before and during the pour
Rust stains, dark patchesExcess or poor-quality oil, rusty plates, wet steel stored on platesClean plates, use a thin release agent coat, store plates dry
Uneven soffit / steps between platesJoints not flush, wrong fixing of the plate pattern, poor levellingLevel the runners, check with a straight edge, fix plates tight
Props sinking / tiltingSoft or wet soil, no sole plate, slab below not proppedCompact and drain the ground, use sole plates, align upper and lower props
Stop-work signs: props leaning or sinking, plates bulging, grout streaming out, cracking sounds, or sagging soffit during the pour. Stop, clear the area below, and call the engineer.

Frequently asked questions

What are the minimum stripping times for centring under IS 456:2000?

For OPC at 15 °C or above: side forms of columns, walls and beams 16–24 hours; slab soffit plates 3 days; beam soffit plates 7 days; props to slabs up to 4.5 m span 7 days, over 4.5 m 14 days; props to beams up to 6 m 14 days, over 6 m 21 days. Extend for PPC, fly-ash or slag cement, cold weather, heavy loads or cantilevers, and follow the engineer.

Which centring defects are most common?

Honeycombing, bulging or leaking forms, sagging slabs and poor finish usually come from grout leakage, weak joints, poor vibration, wrong prop spacing or early stripping. The defects table lists causes and prevention.
